Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal therapy is a set of dental procedures to treat periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the process of losing bone support surrounding your teeth. Regular cleanings can help prevent this from occurring and to keep it stable if it has begun.
Most adults and elders have periodontal disease to some extent and will require this deeper cleaning.
Signs You May Need Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal therapy may be recommended if you are experiencing:
Periodontal disease does not always cause noticeable pain, which is why regular dental hygiene assessments are important for early detection.
What to Expect
Your gums will first be carefully assessed, including measurements of the spaces between your teeth and gums. Treatment is then personalized according to the assessment.
Scaling and Root Planing will occur below the gums to remove tatar build up from these periodontal pockets. Antibacterial solutions may be applied in these pockets as well.
Local anesthetic can be available when needed to help keep you comfortable during deeper cleaning, topical or full freezing available. After treatment, you will receive home-care recommendations designed to support healing and improve your daily oral-hygiene routine.
In some extensive cases it is recommended to see a dentist that has specialized in periodontal disease, called a Periodontist. Referrals will be made as needed, the closest periodontist to Nelson is in Kelowna BC.
